United vs American baggage fees in 2026: are they the same now?

Pretty much the same on domestic flights now. After the April 2026 increases:

• First bag: about $45 if paid online, $50 at the airport
• Second bag: about $55 online, $60 at the airport
• Third bag: $200 on both
• Dates: United’s change applied to tickets bought from April 3, 2026, and American’s from April 9, 2026
• American Basic Economy: higher, starting May 18, 2026

Prepaying online saves a few dollars per bag, and airline credit cards or status can waive the first bag. Always confirm your own fee in your booking. More on United vs American baggage fees is here.
